Group/Sort Tabs Firefox extension 1.0

19. July 2008

12-27-09 Hi friends! The new version is over here: Group/Sort Tabs 2.0

This extension adds group and sort support to tabs in Firefox.

8-07-08 In addition to having been approved by Mozilla (hooray!), this project has a new support/discussion/feature page on UserVoice! Please drop by and leave me a suggestion, the site is very easy to use, and no registration required.

The source code and changes are still available on Google Code. />

The earlier FF2 version of this extension is "Sort Tabs By ...".

Features

  • Optionally group your tabs by hostname. (More to come.)
  • Sort your tabs by last opened date, hostname, or last browsed date.
  • Intelligently handles the opening/restoration of multiple tabs at once, only sorting when the URL of all opened tabs is known.
  • Sorts tabs immediately upon navigating to a different URL, prior to full page load.
  • Tabs can be manually moved into other groups.

Requirements

Known Limitations

  • The entire host before the first / is matched when comparing host names, so sites with different subdomains (like addons.mozilla.org and developer.mozilla.org) will not be grouped together. This can be undesirable with certain URLs (such as img161.imageshack.us and img299.imageshack.us).
  • You can only manually move a tab into another group if you drop it somewhere in the middle of the group (no edges). I'd like an easy and intuitive method of grouping/ungrouping tabs for the future.
  • Manually rearranging tabs out of the sort order is not a feature of this version. I've worked toward supporting it, but decided to release without it. Also, I may be overestimating its importance.

Recommendations

  • Using ChromaTabs or ColorfulTabs configured to color code your tabs by URL.
  • Similarly the 'close similar tabs' or 'close other tabs from this host' features of Tab Mix Plus and Closy may be useful.

hihi chris

There is a major highlight for Confusion.

Is there any way to resolve the confusion problem? New tabs are arranged automatically, hence user have no clue where it's been sorted to.

When you type in url for a new tab, the url will be loaded on the "current" tab instead of the selected tab.

Any idea on this?

I have an idea, maybe "about:blank" or new tabs will not be arranged until it goes into another website/url then it will be sorted.

What do u think?

Hi again Jerry,

I'm not entirely sure I follow you. What would the difference be between the selected and "current" tab? I'd expect them to be the same?

In all cases except sorting by hostname, new tabs should be on the far right (or far left) of the screen.

oky, i will explain further.

when u open and select the new tab and key in a url, the url still loads on the previous used tab instead of the new tab.

I have to switch between the tabs a few times, so that the focus work correctly.

Here's a video demo i captured (Xvid codec):

Is it a bug or some conflict with other addons?

This sounds very much like the bug report here: groupsorttabs.uservoice.com/.../17198

It indeed appears to be a conflict with another add-on, but that doesn't mean I won't fix it. ;)
Feel free to go there and add your voice and votes to the issue. I'll make it a priority regardless.

(PS. That URL shortening there is deceptive. I will be tweaking the link parsing code to allow more length and/or _always_ display the necessary ellipsis.)

One of the other alternatives to solve your problem might be using Search Tab (addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10164). A blogpost (pratikpoddarcse.blogspot.com/.../...ch-tab-17.html) by the developer lists the awards it has received. Search Tab is awesome...
